Adolescence is a term used to refer to the period of human development that falls between childhood and adulthood. Erik Erikson (1994), says that adolescence is a period of “identity crisis”, this called conditions in search of their personal identity by being faced with various questions about who they are, what they want in life, and how they view themselves in society etc.. The American Academy of Pediatrics (2001) defines adolescence as individuals between the ages of 11 and 21. They consider adolescence as a special period in human development that requires special attention in various matters relating to the health, physical and mental development of children. Various adolescent problems that currently occur in our environment such as cases of bullying, violence against peers which can have a serious impact on the loss of a person’s life, vandalism, “klitih” (criminal activity that happen to random people usually using sharp object when doing this activity), drugs and various other juvenile delinquencies that violate the law certainly require special attention, especially families as the fastest environment for growth and development. Juvenile delinquency is often a sign of deeper problems, including family problems, mental health problems, family and social pressure, peer problems, or negative environmental influences that have an impact on behaviour change. This condition certainly requires various kinds of efforts both prevention and intervention needed to help adolescents overcome the negative behaviours that arise. One of the efforts that can be made is strengthening family resilience.
The role of Family
Family resilience is one of the current thematic issues of National development where the family has an important position for strengthening various aspects of life. Family resilience is seen as the smallest unit that is able to manage the problems faced by its family members. Furthermore, strengthening family resilience is also one of the important aspects for the creation of a prosperous family which is shown through various dimensions, among others: The foundation of legality and family integrity, physical resilience, economic resilience, social psychological resilience and socio-cultural resilience. The importance of the family’s position in various aspects of life is important to be able to create family resilience. Strong family resilience can play a role in preventing social problems such as juvenile delinquency. Some things that can be done to create family resilience strengthening include:
There is a balance of roles for each family member. This balance of roles is important, not only for parents but also for other members of the family. The roles that are carried out will differ according to their position and capacity in the family, but the roles that are then realized must be based on the family’s ability to identify the potential of each family member.
Communication. Building effective communication within the family is key to understanding the needs and feelings of each family member. The family’s ability to communicate will be able to make each family member convey the various things they feel. By communicating openly, the problems faced by family members will be better resolved
Family empowerment. Family empowerment is an activity that encourages each family member to take initiative, develop skills, and participate in family decision-making. This activity can also increase the sense of belonging and responsibility within the family.
Space for joint activities. Involving the family in joint activities will strengthen the role of each family member and improve the relationship between family members
The realization of family resilience can not only be done by the family itself but it is important for the government, social organizations, community groups to be able to work together in realizing strengthening family resilience as a step in preventing various social problems. Various programs can also be carried out such as strengthening education programs both formal and informal, economic support through empowerment, counselling support, and other resource support that helps families to overcome challenges, stability in realizing welfare. Strengthening family resilience can also strengthen community social groups so that they can overcome economic, social and other environmental challenges.

Recently, both local and foreign media have been highlighting air pollution in Indonesia. In 2020, the results of the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) stated that Indonesia was include as top 10 most polluted countries in the world. The latest data from the research states that almost all Indonesians live in areas with average annual particulate matter (PM) concentrations exceeding WHO standards. Other pollutants can come from Ozone (O3), Sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), Carbon monoxide (CO), and lead. This illustrates that we are not only breathing in oxygen, but also inhaling invisible dangerous things.
Particulates are very small, can be in the form of dust, soot smoke and dirt formed from emissions from burning gasoline, oil, fuel and wood. In addition, sources of pollutants are also found in construction sites, garbage dumps, agriculture, forest fires. The material is inhaled through the nose into the lungs. Inhaled air pollutants can irritate the respiratory tract and cause shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, asthma attacks and chest pain. Continued exposure to pollution also increases the risk of chronic diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Heart Attack, Stroke and premature death. Air pollution can also reduce cognitive function and dementia in the elderly. Data from AQLI also states that particulate matter pollution can reduce life expectancy (UHH) by 1.4 years in the average age of the Indonesian population. On the other hand, UHH in diabetes and kidney infections, which are Indonesia’s health burdens, is lower than the effects of air pollution, 1.2 years.
Preventing the increase in air pollution requires systematic arrangements and policies from the government to citizens. Reducing pollution can have a positive impact on health and increase life expectancy. Does diet contribute to the prevention of pollution-related diseases? Of course, the answer is absolutely correct.
Exposure to pollutants can cause molecular changes in the body and the course/pathogenesis of disease due to oxidative stress. Some studies suggest that genes involved in oxidative stress are susceptible to ozone, potentially leading to the development of asthma. Taking antioxidant supplements may provide protection against exposure. Pollutants are a source of free radicals. If the number of free radicals is higher than the antioxidants in the body, oxidative stress is formed. Analogously, a free radical is a substance whose life must have a partner in order to function properly, the partner being an antioxidant. If they are alone without a partner, they will cause harmful effects. A high number of free radicals and not enough antioxidants can cause oxidative stress. Therefore, food sources of antioxidants are necessary for the prevention of oxidative stress. In addition to antioxidants, foods with good sources of protein and fat will boost the immune system in the body to prevent inflammation.
Balanced nutrition has various benefits as a source of energy, maintaining the immune system, repairing damaged cells and the body’s developmental process. My Plate, which depicts portions for staple foods, vegetable side dishes, animal side dishes and vegetables and fruit, has been designed to support a healthy life. The portion of vegetables and fruit is half of the plate while the remaining half is staple foods and side dishes. In a day, the amount of staple food consumption is 3-4 servings, vegetables 3-4 servings, fruit as much as 2-3 servings and vegetable and animal side dishes 2-3 servings. My plate also emphasizes limiting sugar, salt and oil consumption. Vegetables, fruits, nuts, fish are also examples of antioxidant-rich foods, which do not increase free radical production and therefore have anti-inflammatory benefits. Good sources of omega 3 fats will reduce the inflammatory response. Likewise, the content of vitamins C, E and polyphenols can increase the role of antioxidants in the body. Conversely, foods that are high in fat, high in simple carbohydrates (sugar) and fast food are examples of pro-inflammatory foods. Trans fats in bad fat sources can increase bad cholesterol levels. Excessive consumption of simple sugars will cause hyperglycaemia, oxidative stress and increase inflammation in the body.

Recent cases of bullying, violence and suicide committed by students in Indonesia have caused concern and sadness. This has also become a hot topic of public discussion. In the last half year (June-July 2023) data from POLRI states that there were 640 suicides recorded. The same period in the previous year recorded 486 cases. This means that Indonesia experienced a 31.7% increase in suicides with a peak increase in June 2023. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Suicide Association states that Indonesia has a suicide emergency with an increase of 303% since 2020. This is happen by various factors; including adaptation, genetics, family, friendship, lifestyle, social, and various other factors. These factors can affect students positively or negatively. However, there are still many students who do not realize the positive and negative impacts of these factors so that they forget about their mental health.. They forget to focus on their mental health because they only focus on assignments, organizations, class schedules, and demands received from people around them in their self-interpretation. Good self-regulation in learning will help students to meet the demands they face. Self-regulation is a person’s ability to control their emotions and behavior in any situation independently.
Mental health problems in Indonesia today are still very high, especially among adolescents. Students are part of adolescents. In this period, they still have unstable emotions and do not have a good ability to solve existing problems. In addition, the existence of the ego I as part of self-discovery is one of the factors that is responsible for mental health problems among adolescents. Because of the pretext of self-discovery, adolescents often do not consider the risks of the choices they make in finding who I am and showing their identity. Adolescence is a time when they often experience stress, especially at certain events in their lives. Adolescents are considered as a vulnerable group to experience mental disorders. Therefore, adolescents need to get more attention because they are the country’s assets and the next generation of the nation.
Mental health has a very important role for new students to adapt to their new college environment. Of course, life on campus and school is much different. New students will find a very diverse range of associations and will find different learning methods compared to school days. Therefore, new students are indirectly required to be able to adapt to their new environment. In addition to new students, old students also experience several impacts caused by online lectures, especially for students who participate in organizations. With the existence of online lectures, there will automatically be more lecture assignments. And now, they need to readjust to a learning model that requires their presence in class. Of course, this will also take up energy, emotions, energy, and requires balanced self-management.
Unfortunately, many students do not care about their mental health. Students are still at an age that does not have the ability to control emotions. Sometimes there are even students who do not have the ability to solve problems due to habits brought from home or parenting patterns that make adolescents dependent. In line with the characteristics of generation-Z, it is easy to get what they want as part of an instant and modern lifestyle. So that the pattern of behaving patiently, waiting for the process and accepting what happens as part of learning in life becomes a big PR among generation Z. In this regard, students need good mental health to be able to control emotions and solve every problem they face. One way to maintain mental health is to maintain a lifestyle. It is necessary to maintain adequate diet, sleep patterns, and exercise. What is equally important is to maintain self-management patterns in dealing with the crises and problems of daily life as part of the process of growing like a physical body that needs intake and nutrition. Likewise with the condition of the soul, it also requires nutritious intake in order to grow with a mindset with a healthy personality. Because mental health is as important as physical health.
In addition, in the midst of many assignments and participating in various organizations, students often experience difficulties in time and self-management. Often just because of the tasks and many activities make students actually feel heavy going through the day which then ends in despair and finally starts to withdraw, feel the problem is never finished, to experience anxiety and end up with shortcuts ranging from thinking about suicide ideas, attempting suicide, to deciding to commit suicide. Actually, people who commit suicide do not want to eliminate their lives but want to solve their problems. He feels that by ending his life, his life problems will also end. The surrounding environment is also very influential on student mental health. Therefore, students need to create a positive environment and relationships. Supportive and caring relationships will make students feel at peace so that they will maintain their mental health. Being a student must be resilient and independent. Care for each other and increase empathy for each other. This will create a good environment for mental health. Especially for those who live in boarding houses far from relatives, of course this will be additional ammunition for the growth of a healthy soul.
Data released by LDP MCCC PP Muhammadiyah (Psychosocial Support Services Muhammadiyah Covid-19 Command Centre) from the period March 2020 – August 2021 states that from around 865 cases that entered and conducted online consultations, there were around 170 cases with suicidal ideation and 56 of them had made suicide attempts including foreigners who were students at one of the universities in Indonesia. The latest data released by WHO during the COVID-19 pandemic, shows a significant increase in cases of mental health disorders in a number of countries. According to data from the official WHO website, they conducted a survey in 130 countries. As a result, there is an adverse impact of Covid-19 on access to mental health services. The WHO survey results stated that more than 60% reported disruption of mental health services for vulnerable people, including children and adolescents (70%); older adults (70%), and women who need antenatal or postnatal services (61%). About 75% of countries reported at least some disruption in schools (78%), and workplace mental health services (75%). How this becomes our homework together to care more, to do something for ourselves and our families and others around us who are also our shared responsibility. We also have a shared responsibility to reduce the increasingly alarming number of suicides. Especially as part of the PT community in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, we are in a suicide-prone area, which certainly needs to be an alarm for us to jointly prevent suicide.
Let’s holding hands together. As we know the impact that changes of mental health impact, it is important to be aware of them. Some of these tips may help to reduce mental health problems both individually and in groups.
In maintaining mental health we need resilience. Resilience is our resistance to stress. There are 4 keys to maintaining our resilience, namely Iam, “I have, I can and I do”.
I AM means that we understand, we understand what our strengths and weaknesses are, we know our strengths and weaknesses, we understand that if something happens to me like this then that means what I need to do. Those who are strong in I Am will be able to manage their problems with their own strengths. But sometimes, we feel that we have too many heavy problems at the same time, so we need other supports to help us survive. Then we need the second key to resilience which is I HAVE.
I HAVE means in a spiritual approach, know which things we can control and which we cannot. Knowing this and always leaning on the Almighty makes the heart calmer. But sometimes when we are depressed by problems, we need a real person we can see and communicate with face to face in a language we understand. So, I have can be interpreted as a support system; family, friends, community or lecturers and people around us who can provide support and accept our condition, always present when we need it. If in certain conditions we need something deeper and more serious, then the support system can be interpreted as a professional.
Next is I CAN; I can be a motivation that we need to get us excited. It is like our guide to achieving our future, which can be in the form of hopes, dreams and aspirations to move forward. We need to have hopes and dreams in our mind to make us feel that we will always be excited about tomorrow. However, I can is not enough because dreams and aspirations must be done, so the fourth key to resilience is I DO.
I DO is doing something for each of our hopes and dreams. As a student who dreams of graduating on time, with a certain amount of GPA, of course requires action or implementation. So, the implementation can be in the form of; going to college, attending lectures well and doing assignments and taking exams to the maximum as part of an effort to grow and nourish the soul. One of the other things that can be done is to maintain our physical health with regular exercise, try to do exercise every day according to the needs of each body. Exercising is proven to reduce the amount of cortisol hormone which triggers stress in the body. It is important for all of us to realize that being a strong and mentally healthy for student is absolutely necessary. Because students are the guardian of the nation in the future of Indonesia. It is in their hands that the progress of this nation in the future will entrusted. It’s time to care for each other and increase empathy. With some of the above methods, it is hoped that it can help to maintain the condition of students’ mental health.

Indonesia’s hot weather has hit some areas in Indonesia in recent days. Temperatures during the day can reach until 35- 38.0°C that far exceeding the maximum comfortable temperature in Indonesia which ranges from 22- 26°C.
Lecturer in the Architecture Program Study at Universitas ‘Aisyiyah (UNISA) Yogyakarta, Indah Pujiyanti, S.T., M.Sc said that this extreme heat condition certainly causes our discomfort when doing activities outdoors and indoors. We may be able to use an air conditioner in lower temperature inside the room, but this will be impact on electrical energy used which is quite large and can actually be one of the causes of global warming effects. Therefore, there are actually several alternatives from passive cooling techniques that we can actually apply to minimize the utilization of air conditioning. At least we can apply it in the design of our respective homes.
Alternative Solution
Indah explained that passive cooling techniques are natural cooling methods with architectural design engineering. Some passive cooling techniques that we can apply to reduce indoor temperatures include ventilative cooling techniques, named a cross ventilation system in buildings. cross ventilation does not only provide ventilation that is open on two sides but by placing ventilation holes on two sides with different heights this is attempted to remove heat from the higher ventilation side.
The next passive cooling alternative is the air cavity on the roof of the building, namely by using a high pyramid / gable roof and avoiding the use of flat roofs, because basically the heat will move to the top of the building so that the heat is not at the effective height of the space for activities.
In addition to ventilative cooling and utilization of air cavities, there is also an evaporative cooling technique, which is by providing water elements around our building so that the incoming solar heat can be reduced by water and the temperature entering the room will be lower than the outdoor temperature.
The last passive cooling technique that we can attempt is by greening, which is increasing the green area and trees around the house then solar radiation entering the room can be reduced and the shadow from the tree canopy can provide shade in some parts of the house.
