UNISA Jogja Held World Class Program: Present Experts from Washington

Fakultas Ilmu Kesehatan (FIKes/Faculty of Health Science) of Universitas ‘Aisyiyah Yogyakarta (UNISA Jogja) held a World Class Professor Program on Wednesday (04/10). The event presented a leading expert, Prof. Joel C. Kuipers from The George Washington University with theme Medical Ethnography.

Medical Ethnography is one of the branches of science related to qualitative research in health sciences, which involves an in-depth study of culture, values, and practices in the context of health care. In the seminar, which was held in the Baroroh Barried Hall, Siti Walidah Building, UNISA Jogja, Prof. Kuipers discussed various aspects related to the application of Medical Ethnography in the context of health care.

The Dean of the Fakultas Ilmu Kesehatan at UNISA Yogyakarta, M. Ali Imron, M.Fis, gave the opening speech at the event. He expressed his hope that the participants of this seminar would be able to apply a multidisciplinary approach in solving various health problems and issues. Dean of FIKes M. Ali Imron, M.Fis emphasized that a linear approach is no longer sufficient to address increasingly complex health problems. He also talked about the need to involve various disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, and medicine to holistically understand the challenges in the health sector.

In this seminar, Prof. Joel C. Kuipers gave an in-depth explanation of Medical Ethnography as a very useful tool in exploring health care practices, cultural understanding, and the social impact of medical decision-making. He also highlighted the important role of ethnography in improving the quality of education in healthcare.

“Medical Ethnography will be a very useful as a teaching material in lectures, as it engages students in a deeper understanding of patient culture, healthcare ethics and better problem solving.” Kuipers said.

The event was also attended by 200 participants consisting of students, lecturers, and healthcare practitioners, who all gained valuable insights into the importance of Medical Ethnography in the improvement of more effective and sustainable healthcare. This seminar proved that UNISA Jogja continues to be committed to advancing health sciences and providing deep insights to students and the community in an effort to improve the quality of health services in the future.
