The Faculty of Economics Social Sciences and Humanities through the Psychology Study Program and the Public Administration Study Program of Universitas ‘Aisyiyah (Unisa) Yogyakarta held a community service at KB ‘Aisyiyah Surya Melati Brajan Tamantirto. This activity was held on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Tolerance is a person’s ability to be able to respect, recognize various differences ranging from opinions, culture, religion, and other values and be able to practice them in social life properly. In the context of our society today, tolerance is indispensable and an important basis for peaceful coexistence in a diverse society. Unfortunately, today the tolerant character that has long been owned by the Indonesian Nation is starting to fade. Many cases of intolerance are shown through bullying cases, brawls, denigrating and mocking other people’s cultures, religions and even opinions and so on. For this reason, the cultivation of tolerant character is needed to shape the character of our human resources so that they have ethics and are able to behave properly in the social environment and other environments.

The service activities carried out are intended to provide knowledge and skills to teachers and parents of students at KB ‘Aisyiyah Surya Melati. Increased knowledge includes an understanding of child development, challenges and management of children’s traits and attitudes to realize social tolerance. The skills activities are intended to provide knowledge and skills for parents and teachers through storytelling media which through this media can improve early childhood character education. The stories told in storytelling activities can introduce moral concepts, ethics, and good social behavior to children, which are very important for their character development. Various strengthening of early childhood character education that can be achieved through storytelling activities include building empathy, introducing values, developing moral character, and being able to strengthen children’s cognitive and motor aspects in building social character and being able to improve communication aspects.

The implementation of community service activities was attended by fifty (50) participants consisting of parents of students and teachers of KB ‘Aisyiyah Surya Melati and teachers. Participants appreciated the community service program well, which was shown through the interaction of discussions and questions and answers between the speakers and participants.

This early childhood social tolerance education program is important to provide strengthening of children’s character. Seeing the importance of this child character strengthening program, UNISA Yogyakarta is present as a tangible manifestation and responsive to the condition of the nation’s next generation.

Furthermore, Tri Winarsih as the chief executive said that “The importance of tolerance character education in early childhood is able to form the basis of their personality and behavior in the future, and storytelling media is a medium that is effectively able to foster these characters,” she said.

Nur Fitri Mutmainah also added that “The role of parents and educators at school is also needed to be able to design, teach and strengthen children’s tolerance values through internalization in daily activities”.
