Muhammadiyah Sokonandi Elementary School inYogyakarta took a big step in improving disaster preparedness and resilience by attending Basic Life Support (BHD) and disaster mitigation training. The training was organized by Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) in collaboration with Universitas ‘Aisyiyah (UNISA) Yogyakarta as part of the community service program of Anesthesia Nursing lecturers.

The training participants consisted of the school principal, Anis Rofiah, S.Pd., M.Si., Sopyian, S.Si., M.Pd., and 30 other teachers. They participated in a series of activities that included exposure to disaster preparedness materials, first aid (bandaging), BHD, and evacuation of disaster victims at school.

Budi Santoso, a SPAB facilitator from MDMC, explained that the training aimed to improve preparedness and resilience at the elementary school level.

“Teachers are invited to recognize disaster risks that exist in schools and increase their knowledge in carrying out first aid to victims. With the skills acquired through this training, teachers are expected to know the role, benefits, and duties or functioning of the emergency team at school,” Budi said.

In addition to improving evacuation and first aid skills, teachers are also trained to make a school disaster risk assessment and develop disaster mitigation and evacuation SOPs. This is important so that teachers know the places that are at risk in the event of a disaster.

This activity was held in response to the condition of SD Muhammadiyah Sokonandi, which has never received disaster socialization and does not have complete medical equipment in the UKS room, such as stretchers and splints. Facilities and infrastructure that support evacuation during a disaster are also lacking.

The Principal of SD Muhammadiyah Sokonandi expressed his gratitude and hoped that this activity could continue. “This activity is very useful for us, and we really hope it can be continued in the future,” he said.

Heri Puspito, S.Kep., Ns., MKM, and Tri Hapsari Listyaningrum, S.ST, MH, from the UNISA Yogyakarta community service team, were also present during the Basic Life Support training at the school. Together with Budi Santoso, they ensured that the training ran smoothly and had a positive impact on all participants.

With this training, it is hoped that SD Muhammadiyah Sukonandi can become an example for other schools in an effort to create a Disaster Safe Education Unit, so that the safety and security of students and all school residents can be guaranteed.
