Lecturers of the Faculty of Health Sciences (Fikes), Universitas ‘Aisyiyah (Unisa) Yogyakarta organized a community service entitled “Introduction of English Vocabulary in Early Childhood through Movement and Song at ABA Losari Kindergarten” at ABA Losari Kindergarten, Ngaglik Sleman. This activity was held on Wednesday, (5/6). This activity was carried out in order to fulfill the tri dharma of higher education which in its implementation involved the community to help overcome the problem of the absence of English language introduction material for early childhood at the school even though early childhood is the right age for the introduction of language vocabulary including foreign languages.

“The purpose of this community service activity is to increase the knowledge of kindergarten or early childhood children about basic English vocabulary, so the introduction and strengthening due to the lack of foreign language input taught formally from schools during their golden age “ explained Farida Noor Rohmah, M.Pd. , a lecturer at Fikes Unisa, regarding the objectives of the service program. Farida added that the introduction of English vocabulary is done with a different method compared to the delivery to adults of course, namely with the method of motion and song.

Responding to this program, the Principal of ABA Losari Kindergarten, Mrs. Isti WIdayanti, S.Pd., thanked LPPM Unisa and the program team for being willing to provide knowledge to ABA Losari kindergarten students and teachers. This knowledge is very important for schools as an effort to equip children with basic English vocabulary knowledge in this modern and digital era.

The form of service carried out was training which was attended by 35 participants consisting of students and teachers of ABA Losari Kindergarten. Also attending the community service program team chaired by Farida Noor Rohmah, M.Pd. with members Setya Putri Rahayu, S.S., M.A. and Miftahush Shalihah, S.S., M.Hum. assisted by three students of the Medical Laboratory Technology Study Program.

The activity began with the opening and introduction of the speaker to the children participating in the program. Next, the presenters provided basic English vocabulary materials delivered using the motion and song method using the song “Head Shoulder Knees and Toes” and its English version, “Head Shoulder Knees and Toes”.

According to several studies, this method is suitable for delivering material for early childhood because songs can be used as a means of learning, including language learning because they are easy to remember and have a cheerful tone, especially coupled with dance movements that match the character of active early childhood. The activity ended with a question and answer session which was packaged in the form of games with prizes for children who could answer questions and practice songs and movements correctly and enthusiastically.

Participants appreciated the service program that was carried out. From the program evaluation, it was found that the knowledge of the program participants increased about basic English vocabulary, especially about Parts of Body. However, the purpose of this program will not be achieved sustainably if there is no support from the closest environment to children, namely parents and families.
