Walidah Dahlan Mosque of ‘Aisyiyah University (Unisa) Yogyakarta shows real steps to support environmental sustainability. One of them is in the distribution of sacrificial animals, as many as 2,000 packages, without using plastic, but using Telobag.

At first glance, Telobag looks similar to plastic, and its use is the same as plastic. However, Telobag is made from cassava which is more environmentally friendly. Telobag is easier to decompose, even in a relatively short time.

Walidah Dahlan Unisa Yogyakarta Mosque in Eid al-Adha this time indeed carries the theme ‘Sharing 2,000 Packages of Zero Plastic Qurban Meat’, as a form of support for protecting the environment.

“In order to be environmentally friendly, we use materials from rice bran, so that later it can be easily decomposed and does not pollute the environment. This is the second year the mosque has organized a zero plastic qurbani,” said Muhammad Nurdin Zuhri, chairman of the mosque’s takmir, Monday (9/6/2025).

This year, the mosque slaughtered 10 cows and 14 goats. In addition to being distributed to local residents and people in need, the meat was also distributed to the Kulon Progo area.

In the process of slaughtering the qurbani, apart from the certified Halal Butchers (Juleha), hundreds of students from various backgrounds were also involved. “We involved around 150 students, both Muslim and non-Muslim. We also collaborate with the Muhammadiyah Mlangi Branch,” said Nurdin.

Head of the Sacrifice Committee of Walidah Dahlan Mosque Unisa Yogyakarta, Islamiyatur Rokhmah, said that the students were not only involved in the slaughtering process. Students are also taught to sacrifice by donating IDR 10,000 per person. “Alhamdulillah, from this fundraising, enough money was collected to buy one cow. The cow comes from students and will be utilized for students as well,” said Islamiyatur.

Islamiyatur said the meaning of this activity is a form of empathy and social care. “We want to feel what the community feels, including online motorcycle taxis, street vendors, and other marginalized groups who may only taste meat once a year,” said Islamiyatur.
